Ferguson Zone

Ferguson Zones is named after its creator Dr Gary Ferguson.

Dr Ferguson set about researching UV output from reptile lighting following the discovery that the skeletal systems of captive reptiles did not have the bone strength of their wild equivalents.

It was discovered that these captive reptiles were not receiving sufficient UV rays within their vivarium’s.

UV rays are absorbed by the reptiles through the skin and is converted into vitamin D3, this D3 is what helps with bone growth and strength.

To help reptile owners, the Ferguson Zones were created, allowing owners a better understanding of the lighting their reptile needs based on the UV index and the reptile breeds specific requirements.

The study originally concentrated on only 15 species of reptile but over the years additional researchers have expanded on this list to include a large range of reptiles.
